Angela is the Director of The Berkley Center for Reproductive Wellness in Brooklyn Heights and the Associate Director of Health and Wellness at The Berkley Center in Manhattan.

Angela completed a four-year Master’s of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine at the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco. In addition to her clinic hours at the California Pacific Medical Center and the Haight-Ashbury Clinic, she apprenticed for three years with Robert Levine, an acupuncturist and herbalist who specializes in treating difficult chronic conditions, such as HIV, Cancer, Lyme’s Disease, endocrine disorders and allergies.

Angela was also a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Lifang Liang. Dr. Liang is the groundbreaking author of Acupuncture and IVF – Increase IVF Success by 40-60%. Dr. Liang is one of the leading acupuncture-infertility specialists in America.

Angela has seen experientially that by combining Western medicine with acupuncture and herbs the clinical efficacy of treatment increases substantially.

"The philosophy of The Berkley Center is to use all medical approaches that will help to cure or relieve health care problems. On a personal level, I have been interested in healing from a very early age. Around the age of seven, I used to take my mother’s nursing textbooks and read them thoroughly. Not knowing about Chinese Medicine at the time, I geared my education toward medical school which I believed to be the only option for pursuing a career in medicine. However, these plans were drastically changed when my sister was cured of a back injury through the use of acupuncture when conventional therapy had failed her after a year. This experience shifted my entire way of thinking about health, disease and wellness.

During my time at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, OR, I studied Chinese language and spent time living in Guilin, China. It was an amazing experience, and I came to understand the deep cultural roots that are ingrained in acupuncture and herbal medicine. After I finished my degree in the history of folk medicine, I immediately completed the courses necessary to enter acupuncture school. In time, I was able to attend the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, one of the oldest institutions in the United States.

At the beginning of my Master’s program, I was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor. Using the best that both medical worlds had to offer, I had the tumor surgically removed and was treated with acupuncture and herbal medicine in order to regain my strength and to recover from the physical and emotional trauma of the operation. Experiencing all of this firsthand and witnessing the benefits of using both modalities to heal myself, I became a firm believer in the power of integrative therapy.

After I fully recovered, I began to study with Robert Levine between my courses and clinical rounds in hospitals and low-income clinics. Robert patiently taught me about the psycho-emotional aspects of Chinese medicine, and with these teachings, he introduced me to the importance of treating the emotional being as well as the physical being. His clinic specialized in treating cancer, Lyme’s disease, endocrine disorders, and autoimmune conditions.

After I left San Francisco, following graduation and the passing of the relevant Board exams, I spent nearly a year traveling and working in the Caribbean. Afterward, I settled in New York.

My special interests include treating reproductive disorders, working with the digestive system, relieving the physiological effects of stress, and helping people who are at a turning point in their lives and who are unsure of how to approach this transition."

Karen Kelly, LMT, MAM

Karen Kelly, LMT, MAM, is a NY State Licensed and Nationally Certified Massage Therapist, Birth Doula and Maya Abdominal Massage Practitioner. Karen is a graduate of the Finger Lakes School of Massage in Ithaca, NY. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Bennington College in Vermont. There she studied holistic medicine and gained a greater awareness of the interconnectedness of one's individual health in relation to the mind, body and spirit.

In brief, Karen has embarked on a life-long study of traditional Maya medicine with the renowned Rosita Arvigo, DN, who has lived in Belize for over 30 years. Dr. Arvigo studied for ten years with Don Elijio Panti, the last of the Traditional Maya Shaman in Central America. After a ten year apprenticeship, Dr. Arvigo developed The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Massage™ which combine modern science with traditional healing and wisdom to produce a holistic path to physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

The primary element of Karen Kelly’s sessions is Arvigo’s Maya Abdominal Massage which is a non-invasive, external massage technique. It guides internal abdominal organs into their proper positions for optimum health and wellbeing and improves organ function by releasing physical and emotional congestion from the abdomen. This technique, which is effective for both men and women, applies anatomy, physiology, herbology and naprapathy (the study of the ligaments, joints and muscles) with Ancient Maya healing techniques to address common ailments.

The technique works by relieving congestion and blockages to improve the flow of chi and fluids of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems. Not only does this restore circulation and lymphatic drainage by relieving these blockages, Maya Abdominal Massage can also ease muscles tightened by tension and emotion and can help to prevent the progression of chronic disease symptoms. Overall, this massage increases circulation to every part of the body which is imperative when stress hormones rise and oxygenated, nutrient-rich blood flow is impaired. In other words, massage is an efficient, drug free solution to many common ailments.

Before your treatment Karen will conduct and review a comprehensive intake of your personal history and healthcare needs. Then, she will decide which integrative and unique massage techniques should be tailored to your individual needs, choosing only those that complement the Arvigo technique such as Swedish massage, Myofacial Release, Reiki, Cranial Sacral, and Reflexology. Additionally, herbal remedies and other natural products are available that may enhance the effect of the Arvigo treatment and may be indicated based upon the lifestyle consult. Follow-up care also depends upon your goals, and in the meantime, Karen will send you home with instructions in Self Care techniques that you can apply in order to enhance the benefits of your office treatments.

Karen’s sessions work in harmony with your body’s natural inclination to heal itself. Many people who receive this work report feeling more in control of their own healing process.

Leslie is passionate about the mind-body relationship and is committed to helping people find a deeper connection to a more healthy, happy and whole self through yoga! In a private yoga session with Leslie, a sequence of postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), meditation and relaxation techniques are developed to meet your individual wellness needs. In addition to adding strength, tone and balance to your body, yoga addresses how you respond to the stress in your life and provides you with a path of discovery to a more authentic sense of yourself.

Hatha yoga works for everyone regardless of body shape and size, age and illness. Its benefits are far reaching and occur on multiple levels, all equally valuable.

· Physically, yoga helps to increase flexibility, strength and balance. Commitment to a yoga practice equals a fit and healthy body that is toned and lengthened. Regular practice of yoga leads to healthier eating habits and an increased awareness of the body and its needs.

· Physiologically, yoga has been proven to decrease cortisol levels (the stress hormone), relax muscle tension, promote deep breathing (which means more oxygenated blood in the system) and activate the parasympathetic nervous system (our body’s built-in mechanism for healing and renewal).

· Psychologically, yoga elevates mood, helps one gain a sense of equanimity in times of stress, develops more self-awareness and reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

· Spiritually, yoga is about experiencing a universal connection, leading to a sense of peace and wholeness and to a knowledge that everything you could need or want is already present within you.
